Most eyecare professionals believe that daily disposable contact lenses are the best option for their patients for a multitude of reasons. Additionally, if there was only 1 option with contact lens wear, daily disposables would most likely be that chosen option. Whether that specific reason is ocular health, vision, comfort, compliance, or some other reason, focus on what resonates. It could be a new wearer or a refit with an existing wearer into a different modality, but that reason needs to be the center point of our daily disposable “offer” to our patients. Here’s my “why” for daily disposables: compliance, compliance, compliance.
Compliance is the largest and most profound reason to fit more daily disposable contact lenses. I’ve been a long-time contact lens wearer, and know that many patients try to stretch out reusable contact lenses. For example, a rare 2-week contact lens-wearing patient returned for an eye exam in the clinic recently. He told the technician that he changes his contact lenses every 2 weeks. While looking at how many boxes of contact lenses he ordered since his exam last year, it was determined that he had only ordered 12 pairs of lenses. He admitted he forgets when he is supposed to change them and most likely wears them longer than 2 weeks. This is very common with reusable contact lens wearers.
After a discussion, he was offered other options to facilitate compliant contact lens wear. The many advantages of daily disposable contact lenses were discussed, but the main focus was on compliance and how that relates to improved ocular health. The feeling of getting a clean lens every day. He agreed and made that commitment to daily disposable contact lenses.
There are many ways to make that presentation, but it needs to come from your “why” and your clinical experience. The daily disposable market is growing in most practices. That growth is dependent on making that offer to patients and the ability to describe the specific potential benefits of those lenses.
