It’s great to have something new to present to contact lens and non-contact lens wearing patients. Eyecare practitioners want their patients to be excited to come see them every year—well, as excited as possible for an eyecare visit. We are blessed to practice in an era of contact lenses where all manufacturers continue to innovate and develop something new.
For a practice that fits a very high percentage of daily disposable lenses, I have many presbyopes and emerging presbyopic patients who are wearing daily disposable toric contact lenses. Fitting them in monovision or dropping them back into a monthly is not ideal, but reusable multifocal contact lenses for astigmatism were the only option that was available prior to this launch. Now, practitioners have a daily disposable option for those patients.
Some tips on how to present these options:
- Lead with the technology:Present the advantages of this new technology and how it will benefit their life. “Hello Patient X, I’m excited to tell you about a new 1-day disposable that will not only correct your astigmatism, but it will also provide you with the improved advantages of a multifocal lens to help with both distance and near vision! This is the first lens to provide all these advantages in a daily disposable lens.”
- Understand the fitting guide:Take a few minutes to look over the fitting guide in order to provide the most accurate diagnostic lens for your patient’s unique prescription out of the gate. Make sure to assess and correct for any toric rotation while working on providing the most optimal multifocal correction for the patient’s visual demands.
- Discuss the cost:As with any new technology, it usually comes at a higher price. I don’t like to go into too much detail, but let them know how this lens is packaged and the associated costs.
Remember, 100% success is not always achievable, but new technology can be a huge opportunity. Patients get excited when their providers care enough to discuss something new that can help benefit their vision. Take the time to integrate new technology on a daily basis!
